Have you ever wondered what the average HbA1c value is among diabetics? How many diabetics are smokers? Or if you\u2019re the only one with a BMI over 25? <\/i><\/b><\/div>\n

In Sweden, we have something called the NDR – the National Diabetes Register. It was founded in 1996 and has since then been collecting enormous amounts of diabetes data form almost all of Sweden\u2019s diabetics. If you head off to www.ndr.nu\/knappen<\/a> (only in Swedish, sorry), you can loose yourself for hours going through their different charts and diagrams. <\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So why is this so important? Yesterday I was invited to a meeting at the headquarters of NDR here in Gothenburg – same procedure as last year. But before the meeting in 2014, I didn’t even know NDR existed. Here they fight every day to keep their statistics up-to-date at all times – and not a lot of people knows about their work. That\u2019s crazy, if you ask me.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The NDR statistics kan be used to our advantage in so many ways. Not only to comfort people who feel like their HbA1c:s or whatever is the worst beyond compare. Not only for bloggers like me to write about. But also for raising awareness about how important the right care is for a diabetic today. With this system doctors can see how an insulin pen treatment works, in contrast to an insulin pump treatment. With this system a person with diabetes can see what clinic has the best statistics before choosing where to be treated. This system might actually push the diabetes care into becoming on top of the game.<\/div>\n

Something I found being extra interesting on yesterday\u2019s meeting was the percentage of pump users split up into females and males. The female pump user rate in Sweden was just over 26 % in 2014, while the men\u2019s were 18 %. How can that be? Why do women prefer insulin pumps over pens more often? Do they have more of a technical interest? Are men more aware of their visual appearance and the invisibility of their diabetes? These kinds of speculations are the result of my very own mind work after digging deeper into the statistics of NDR. What if every single diabetic did some research and started speculating in their own way? Curiosity is a strong and important quality in people these days – because it can lead us to bigger things. Discoveries, new devices, and maybe – one day – a cure.<\/div>\n

I Sverige har vi n\u00e5got som heter NDR – Nationella DiabetesRegistret. Det grundades \u00e5r 1996 och har sedan dess samlat in enorma m\u00e4ngder diabetesdata fr\u00e5n n\u00e4stan alla Sveriges diabetiker. Om du klickar in p\u00e5 www.ndr.nu\/knappen<\/a>, kan du spendera timmar p\u00e5 att g\u00e5 igenom alla deras tabeller och digram.<\/div>\n

S\u00e5 varf\u00f6r \u00e4r detta viktigt? Ig\u00e5r var jag inbjuden till ett m\u00f6te p\u00e5 NDR:s huvudkontor h\u00e4ri G\u00f6teborg – p\u00e5 samma s\u00e4tt som f\u00f6rra \u00e5ret. Men innan \u00e5r 2014 visste jag inte ens att NDR fanns. De k\u00e4mpar varje dag med att h\u00e5lla sin statistik aktuell – och s\u00e5 \u00e4r det inte m\u00e5nga som vet att de finns. Det \u00e4r galet om du fr\u00e5gar mig.<\/div>\n

NDR-statistiken kan anv\u00e4ndas till v\u00e5r f\u00f6rdel p\u00e5 s\u00e5 m\u00e5nga s\u00e4tt. Inte bara f\u00f6r att tr\u00f6sta dem som tror att deras HbA1c eller liknande \u00e4r s\u00e4mst av allt. Inte bara f\u00f6r att bloggare som mig ska ha n\u00e5got att skriva om. Men ocks\u00e5 f\u00f6r att v\u00e4cka uppm\u00e4rksamhet kring hur viktig r\u00e4tt diabetesv\u00e5rd \u00e4r idag. Med det h\u00e4r systemet kan l\u00e4kare se hur pennbehandling st\u00e5r sig gentemot pumpbehandling. Med det h\u00e4r systemet kan en diabetiker se vilken klinik som har b\u00e4st statistik innan hen g\u00f6r sitt v\u00e5rdval. Det h\u00e4r systemet kan pusha diabetev\u00e5rden till att alltid vara ”on top of the game”.<\/div>\n

N\u00e5got jag fann extra intressant under g\u00e5rdagens m\u00f6te var procentsatsen pumpanv\u00e4ndare uppdelat p\u00e5 kvinnor och m\u00e4n. Svenska kvinnor med diabetes anv\u00e4nde under 2014 av insulinpump i drygt 26 % av fallen, medan samma siffra f\u00f6r m\u00e4n var 18 %. Hur kommer det sig? Varf\u00f6r f\u00f6redrar kvinnor pump i fler fall? Har de ett st\u00f6rre tekniskt intresse? \u00c4r m\u00e4n mer medvetna om sitt yttre och sin diabetes osynlighet? Denna sortens spekulationer \u00e4r resultatet av min egen tankeg\u00e5ng efter att ha gr\u00e4vt runt i NDR:s statistik. T\u00e4nk om alla diabetiker skulle l\u00e4sa p\u00e5 och b\u00f6rja fundera p\u00e5 det h\u00e4r? Nyfikenhet \u00e4r en stark och viktig egenskap hos m\u00e4nniskor idag – eftersom det kan leda till st\u00f6rre ting. Uppt\u00e4ckter, nya hj\u00e4lpmedel, och kanske – en dag – ett botemedel.<\/div>\n
